Lookout Mountain Hang Gliding
Imagine floating effortlessly in the sky. The earth turns gently beneath you as green mountains and spacious valleys span out as far as the eye can see. A hawk rises towards you from below. Clouds are within reach. Arching through the air is as easy as willing it, and everyday problems are a distant memory. It’s as if you are dreaming, but you’re not. You’re hang gliding.
Man’s oldest dream is a reality today. Lucky for Chattanooga, America’s premier hang gliding school lies just minutes outside of town. Lookout Mountain Flight Park (LMFP) has been in business for over 30 years and trains five times as many novice rated hang gliding pilots than any other hang gliding school in the country.
Besides LMFP’s excellent foot launch training program which preps students for mountain launching, the school also uses another method of training known as tandem aerotowing. For someone interested in experiencing for themselves what makes hang gliding one of the most exciting sports in the world, taking a tandem flight with an instructor is a great option. Even better, sign up for the Introductory Experience Package – it gives you the thrill of taking off by yourself on the training hills in the morning, then going for a tandem lesson in the afternoon.
For the purpose of getting tandem flights airborne, LMFP utilizes a method of launching known as aerotowing. Just like a boat pulls a water-skier, a special purpose airplane tows the tandem hang glider from the valley floor to altitude at which point it releases. Customers have the option of taking flights to either 2000 or 4000 feet. Views of the surrounding area are spectacular overlooking Chattanooga, Lookout Mountain, Lookout Valley and Cloudland Canyon State Park. Flying in the vicinity of clouds is not uncommon, nor is finding yourself wingtip to wingtip with a soaring bird. The unique feeling one experiences in free flight cannot adequately be described – it has to be experienced.
On the ground, LMFP excels as well. Flanking the spacious landing field are rental cabins, RV park, campground, clubhouse, swimming pool, volleyball court and fire pit. LMFP is located at 7201 Scenic Highway, Rising Fawn, GA 30738. For reservations and more information call 877-HANGLIDE (877-426-4543) and visit www.hanglide.com.
